At some point in the future, Champion Forest Baptist Church online devotionals may resume.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The title of the book in the Old Testament we refer to as Ecclesiastes comes from the Septuagint (LXX) which uses the Greek word <em>ekklesiastes<\/em>. The word means \u201cpreacher\u201d and refers to the one who gathers an assembly of people and speaks to them. Solomon is accepted as the author of Ecclesiastes by most scholars. In the first verse he refers to himself as \u201cthe son of David, king in Jerusalem.\u201d Additionally, he says he is, \u201cking over Israel in Jerusalem\u201d (1:12), and \u201cbesides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge.\u201d (12:9).&nbsp; Solomon was known as the son of King David (1 Kings 3), the third king over the united kingdom of Israel, and for unmatched wisdom in the land (1:16). The book can be dated around 930 B.C. because it was most likely composed in Solomon\u2019s latter years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though Solomon did not initially ask for long life, wealth, or the death of his enemies, but for wisdom to govern the people of Israel, God granted both.&nbsp; However, even though he knew better, he acted foolishly by taking many wives and worshipping other gods. He became selfish and apathetic towards God. Ecclesiastes is autobiographical as the old king reflects on his many foolish decisions and empty pursuits. He concludes that life without God and the pursuit of pleasure is all \u201cvanity.\u201d He warns subsequent generations to avoid the same mistakes he made and that a life lived without God is futile and meaningless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-76b874c ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ecclesiastes 10<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1\u00a0Dead flies make\u00a0the perfumer&#8217;s ointment give off a stench;<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.<br><sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>A wise man&#8217;s heart inclines him to the right,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0but a fool&#8217;s heart to the left.<br><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>Even when the fool walks on the road, he lacks sense,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and he\u00a0says to everyone that he is a fool.<br><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>If the anger of the ruler rises against you,\u00a0do not leave your place,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for calmness\u00a0will lay great offenses to rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were&nbsp;an error proceeding from the ruler:&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>folly is set in many high places, and the rich sit in a low place.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>I have seen slaves&nbsp;on horses, and princes walking on the ground like slaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>He who\u00a0digs a pit will fall into it,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and\u00a0a serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall.<br><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>He who quarries stones is hurt by them,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and he who\u00a0splits logs is endangered by them.<br><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0he must use more strength,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0but wisdom helps one to succeed.<br><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>If the serpent bites before it is\u00a0charmed,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0there is no advantage to the charmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>The words of a wise man&#8217;s mouth\u00a0win him favor,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0but\u00a0the lips of a fool consume him.<br><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and the end of his talk is evil madness.<br><sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>A fool multiplies words,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0though no man knows what is to be,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and who can tell him\u00a0what will be after him?<br><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>The toil of a fool wearies him,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for he does not know\u00a0the way to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and your princes feast in the morning!<br><sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>Happy are you, O land, when your king is the son of the nobility,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and your princes feast at the proper time,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;for strength, and not for&nbsp;drunkenness!<br><sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>Through sloth the roof sinks in,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and through indolence the house leaks.<br><sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>Bread is made for laughter,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and&nbsp;wine gladdens life,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and&nbsp;money answers everything.<br><sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>Even in your thoughts,&nbsp;do not curse the king,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;nor in your&nbsp;bedroom curse the rich,<br>for a bird of the air will carry your voice,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;or some winged creature tell the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" .ugb-inner-block{text-align:center}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>As the preacher mentions dead flies making the perfumer\u2019s ointment give off a stench, a life of folly and poor decisions can quickly undo the blessings received from previous wise decisions and living for God (v.1).&nbsp; As it has been said before, the Christian life is a marathon and not a sprint. Everyday must be lived in submission to God and seeking his presence and wisdom.<\/li><li>Living foolishly eventually becomes apparent to all (v. 3).&nbsp; We must never think that living a life of folly will only affect the person doing so. The concentric circles of sin affect other lives in negative ways as well.<\/li><li>The preacher has seen the wealthy in low places because folly is no respecter of persons (vv. 5-7).&nbsp; Many times, riches are associated with the wise and blessed while poverty is associated with careless living and unwise decisions.&nbsp; But this is not always the case and life is not always fair. Can you list some wise decisions you have made in your life and how those decisions resulted in blessings?<\/li><li>A foolish person\u2019s words will usually come back to haunt him or her. Jesus said in Matthew 12:37, \u201cFor by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Prayer: Lord, make me wise and help me to live as a wise person and to not succumb to foolishness in my words or in the way I live. Help me to bring honor to you. \u201cLet the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer (Psalm 19:14).\u201d In Jesus\u2019 name, amen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-ca132d0 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-ca132d0 hr.ugb-divider__hr{margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We encourage everyone to have a daily time in God\u2019s word.
