{"id":128,"date":"2019-12-06T00:30:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-06T06:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/?p=128"},"modified":"2019-12-04T14:46:09","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T20:46:09","slug":"luke-day-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.championforest.org\/devotionals\/luke-day-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Luke Chapter 6"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Day 6: December 6, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Jesus continues his public ministry in Galilee, he has several confrontations with the religious leaders of his day who are more interested in outward expressions of religion than the inward condition of their hearts. Jesus challenged their understanding of what God expected from his followers and made radical statements like \u201cLove your enemies.\u201d Imagine the response of the Pharisees when Jesus said, \u201cThe evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored in his heart.\u201d The teachings of Jesus are as polarizing today as they were then, and just like the disciples and the Pharisees, we have a choice in what kind of fruit we will bear (6:43-45).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-container ugb-container ugb-b6fccc0 ugb-container--v2 ugb-container--design-basic ugb-main-block\" id=\"\"><style>.ugb-b6fccc0 .ugb-b6fccc0-wrapper.ugb-container__wrapper{border-radius:12px !important;background-color:#f1f1f1 !important}.ugb-b6fccc0 ugb--shadow-3\"><div class=\"ugb-container__side\"><div class=\"ugb-container__content-wrapper ugb-b6fccc0-content-wrapper\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Luke 6<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>On a Sabbath,&nbsp;while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples&nbsp;plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands.&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>But some of the Pharisees said,&nbsp;\u201cWhy are you doing&nbsp;what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus answered them,&nbsp;\u201cHave you not read&nbsp;what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>how he entered the house of God and took and ate&nbsp;the bread of the Presence,&nbsp;which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>And he said to them,&nbsp;\u201cThe Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Man with a Withered Hand<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>On another Sabbath,&nbsp;he entered the synagogue&nbsp;and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered.&nbsp;<sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup>And the scribes and the Pharisees&nbsp;watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath,&nbsp;so that they might find a reason to accuse him.&nbsp;<sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand,&nbsp;\u201cCome and stand here.\u201d&nbsp;And he rose and stood there.&nbsp;<sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup>And Jesus said to them,&nbsp;\u201cI ask you,&nbsp;is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?\u201d&nbsp;<sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;after looking around at them all he said to him,&nbsp;\u201cStretch out your hand.\u201d&nbsp;And&nbsp;he did so, and his hand was restored.&nbsp;<sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup>But they were filled with&nbsp;fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Twelve Apostles<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>In these days&nbsp;he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>And when day came,&nbsp;he called his disciples&nbsp;and&nbsp;chose from them twelve, whom he named&nbsp;apostles:&nbsp;<sup>14&nbsp;<\/sup>Simon,&nbsp;whom he named Peter, and&nbsp;Andrew his brother, and&nbsp;James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew,&nbsp;<sup>15&nbsp;<\/sup>and&nbsp;Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called&nbsp;the Zealot,&nbsp;<sup>16&nbsp;<\/sup>and&nbsp;Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>17&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;he came down with them and stood on a level place, with&nbsp;a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of&nbsp;Tyre and Sidon,&nbsp;<sup>18&nbsp;<\/sup>who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases.&nbsp;And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.&nbsp;<sup>19&nbsp;<\/sup>And all the crowd&nbsp;sought to touch him, for&nbsp;power came out from him and healed them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Beatitudes<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>20&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;he lifted up his eyes on his disciples,&nbsp;and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBlessed are you who are poor, for&nbsp;yours is the kingdom of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>21&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cBlessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBlessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>22&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cBlessed are you when&nbsp;people hate you and when they&nbsp;exclude you and revile you and&nbsp;spurn your name as evil,&nbsp;on account of the Son of Man!&nbsp;<sup>23&nbsp;<\/sup>Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for&nbsp;so their fathers did to the prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Pronounces Woes<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>24&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cBut woe to you who are rich,&nbsp;for you&nbsp;have received your consolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>25&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWoe to you who are full now, for&nbsp;you shall be hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWoe to&nbsp;you who laugh now,&nbsp;for you shall mourn and weep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>26&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWoe to you,&nbsp;when all people speak well of you, for&nbsp;so their fathers did to&nbsp;the false prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Love Your Enemies<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>27&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cBut I say to you who hear,&nbsp;Love your enemies,&nbsp;do good to those who hate you,&nbsp;<sup>28&nbsp;<\/sup>bless those who curse you,&nbsp;pray for those who abuse you.&nbsp;<sup>29&nbsp;<\/sup>To one who&nbsp;strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic&nbsp;either.&nbsp;<sup>30&nbsp;<\/sup>Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.&nbsp;<sup>31&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>32&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cIf you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.&nbsp;<sup>33&nbsp;<\/sup>And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.&nbsp;<sup>34&nbsp;<\/sup>And&nbsp;if you&nbsp;lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount.&nbsp;<sup>35&nbsp;<\/sup>But&nbsp;love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and&nbsp;you will be sons of&nbsp;the Most High, for&nbsp;he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.&nbsp;<sup>36&nbsp;<\/sup>Be merciful, even as&nbsp;your Father is merciful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Judging Others<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>37&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cJudge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned;&nbsp;forgive, and you will be forgiven;&nbsp;<sup>38&nbsp;<\/sup>give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put&nbsp;into your lap. For&nbsp;with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>39&nbsp;<\/sup>He also told them a parable:&nbsp;\u201cCan a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?&nbsp;<sup>40&nbsp;<\/sup>A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is&nbsp;fully trained will be like his teacher.&nbsp;<sup>41&nbsp;<\/sup>Why do you see the speck that is in your brother&#8217;s eye, but&nbsp;do not notice the log that is in your own eye?&nbsp;<sup>42&nbsp;<\/sup>How can you say to your brother, \u2018Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,\u2019 when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother&#8217;s eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Tree and Its Fruit<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>43&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cFor&nbsp;no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,&nbsp;<sup>44&nbsp;<\/sup>for&nbsp;each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.&nbsp;<sup>45&nbsp;<\/sup>The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces&nbsp;evil,&nbsp;for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build Your House on the Rock<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>46&nbsp;<\/sup>\u201cWhy&nbsp;do you call me \u2018Lord, Lord,\u2019 and not do what I tell you?&nbsp;<sup>47&nbsp;<\/sup>Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:&nbsp;<sup>48&nbsp;<\/sup>he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.&nbsp;<sup>49&nbsp;<\/sup>But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.
