Chris serves as pastor of Riverside Church in Denver, Colorado.  He and his family relocated to Denver in 2017 to begin a new church plant alongside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namb.net\">North American Mission Board<\/a> (NAMB). Before serving as a church planter in Denver, Chris served as a pastor at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, TN. He holds a B.S. from the University of Tennessee and an M.A.C.M from Liberty University. He is pursuing a Doctorate in Executive Leadership at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Chris is married to Libby, and they have three sons, Tripp, Paxton, and Rhett, and one daughter, Henley Grace.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tell us about your current ministry context.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Phillips:<\/strong> Riverside Church is located in Denver, Colorado, in the urban context and urban edge. Our church is focused on the &#8220;one.&#8221; 95% of Denver is spiritually disconnected from Christ. We are running hard to tell them about the love of Jesus and lead them to live the Jesus life. We serve more affluent communities in urban Denver, with the average attendee between the ages of 28 and 34. Core motivators among our people are success, purpose, belonging, and experience, so we often address these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the greatest challenge you face as a church right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Phillips<\/strong>: We face a variety of challenges in Denver. First, only about 5% of people in our area have a faith background. Second, people live here less than three years on average, meaning our time to invest in their lives is limited. The most significant challenge we face right now is finding 3rd\u00a0space environments for people to \u201ctest the waters\u201d and find community within our church family. Denver is the 3rd\u00a0loneliest city in America, and finding spaces for people to come out of their shells is difficult. Their first step isn\u2019t typically toward a church, so we try to find other spaces to bring our church community to our city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is one piece of advice you would offer new church planters?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Phillips<\/strong>: I would tell future church planters that God has called them to plant their church and no one else. If they try to do what others are doing or be who others are, they won\u2019t reach the people God\u2019s called them, and only them, to reach. With that in mind, they should focus not on starting a worship service first but on uniquely engaging their community. Planters often try to start a church, then make disciples, and then engage a city, but they should do the reverse instead: (1) engage a city, (2) make disciples, and (3) start the church. I have found that this order is more effective for long-term success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How is your family doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Phillips<\/strong>: My family, right now, is thriving. We feel a deep sense of calling to this city and are more committed to that call than ever before. We\u2019re busy for sure, but we\u2019re healthy. My wife and I have kept the following rhythm, which has helped us stay focused on the main thing: Dialogue Daily, Date Weekly, and Depart Often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is God teaching you in this season?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Phillips<\/strong>: Patience. I\u2019m an enneagram 3\u2014a highly driven and disciplined person\u2014but taking on a dying church a little over a year ago and embracing a \u201cone church in multiple locations and languages\u201d mindset has taught me about patience in new ways. God continues to teach me that he can do it and doesn\u2019t need me, but I get to join in his activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How can Champion Forest pray for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Phillips<\/strong>: We\u2019re praying for influence in Denver\u2019s Jefferson Park and Central Park and among the Spanish-speaking communities. We are also asking God to inspire and provide future planters, GenSenders, and missionaries to join us for his work in Denver, the West, and the World. We would appreciate it if you would join us in praying for these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CF Connect exists to encourage and support pastors and church planters doing the work of ministry. She thought she couldn't have a relationship with Jesus. This all changed when her aunt invited her to a new church. Ana was struck by the beauty of this new church. The way they worshipped God and talked about Scripture opened her eyes and heart. It made her want to start going to church more.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>But soon after this, she found herself in an unhealthy relationship. This relationship eventually led her astray, and she stopped going to church. She focused so much on this relationship that she quickly lost herself. She wrestled with depression and anxiety during this season, and to make matters worse, her mom was also going through her own mental health battle. It was a difficult period in Ana\u2019s life. She felt like everything was spiraling out of control.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>One day, she had a terrible argument with her mom, and in a moment of intense emotion, she found herself yelling at her mom. She had become someone she didn't recognize. \u201cI don\u2019t yell at my family like this,\u201d she thought to herself. She was devastated and heartbroken that she had let things get to this point. In a state of despair, she left and headed to a nearby park, alone. At the park, she just cried. \u201cThere\u2019s no hope left for me,\u201d she thought. She felt like the only way out was to end her life.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Amidst her desperation, she turned to God and whispered for help. She apologized for distancing herself from him and asked for strength to endure. Moments later, two older ladies walked towards her. As they approached, Ana couldn't stop crying, until one of them reached out her hand and placed it on Ana\u2019s shoulder. The woman spoke softly, saying, \"I'm so sorry.\" Ana knew God had answered her prayer. It was the spark of hope she needed.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Since then, Ana\u2019s relationship with Jesus and her faith has grown tremendously. Of course, it has been a journey, but Ana has seen God\u2019s faithfulness time and time again. She set a goal to begin reading the Bible daily, and now she can't wait to read it every day. Even in times of frustration or bitterness, she will pray or go to her Bible, asking God for answers.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>But her journey didn't end there. She eventually found her way to The Grove, a young adult gathering at Champion Forest. She started attending regularly. Now, she serves at the Grove as part of the weekly hospitality team. She continues to meet new people each week who share her hunger for the Lord. When asked about her time at the Grove, Ana said, \u201cWe worship Jesus together and discuss Scripture, and I've even had the chance to pray over others. Being part of this community has been a huge blessing for me, and I believe it was completely the Holy Spirit guiding me to this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Ana\u2019s testimony is a good reminder that no matter how lost you may feel, God is always with you. He will guide you and give you the strength you need to get through even the toughest of times. It's okay to ask for help, to pray, and to turn to God in moments of desperation.
