Temptation is a given in life. We all face it daily\u2014whether you are 18 or 80\u2014and no one is exempt from it. But how do we resist temptation? How do we stand firm when everything in us wants to give in? In Luke 4:1-13, we see how Jesus faced temptation and emerged victorious, giving us a powerful model for overcoming our own struggles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Timing of Temptation<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most striking aspects of Jesus\u2019 temptation is when it occurs\u2014immediately after His baptism. This was a spiritual high point, a moment of divine affirmation when God declared, “You are my beloved Son; with you, I am well pleased” (Luke 3:22). Yet, right after this, Jesus is led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This teaches us an important lesson: temptation often follows spiritual victories. We tend to think we are most vulnerable when we are weak, discouraged, or struggling, but in reality, the enemy often attacks right after moments of great spiritual success. It\u2019s been said that \u201cnew levels bring new devils.\u201d We must recognize that some temptation will come, not during the low points, but right after the high points! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

King David\u2019s downfall with Bathsheba happened not during war but when he was at ease. He fell prey to temptation after a victory in battle. Things were good! He was the King, life was going his way. The same pattern plays out in our lives\u2014after our \u201cmountaintop\u201d moments, the enemy tries to lure us away from God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nature of Temptation<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Temptation is not just about breaking rules\u2014it\u2019s about undermining trust in God. In Luke 4, Satan tempts Jesus in three ways, and these same temptations are common to all of us: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan targets physical appetites (feasts on the flesh)<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Satan tempts Jesus to turn stones into bread (Luke 4:3). Jesus fasted for 40 days\u2014of course, he was hungry and probably hangry! But Satan wasn\u2019t just offering Jesus food. He was tempting him to doubt that God would provide. Jesus refuses to use His divine power for self-satisfaction, instead trusting God to provide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson<\/em><\/strong>:<\/em> Satan often tempts us through our physical needs or desires\u2014hunger, comfort, and pleasure, but God calls us to trust Him rather than satisfy our cravings in ways that dishonor Him.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan targets personal ambitions (life about you)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Satan offers Jesus authority over all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship (Luke 4:5-7). The temptation is to bypass suffering and take the easy road to glory. He says, \u201cBow down, and I\u2019ll give these to you.\u201d Talk about temptation! Jesus was worthy of the glory of all the world\u2019s kingdoms, but the lie was that he would gain all the kingdoms by bowing down. Instead, he would do so by dying on the cross. The target was spiritual allegiance: Bow down and worship \u201cme.\u201d Jesus chose to worship God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Lesson<\/em><\/strong>:<\/em> The devil tempts us with shortcuts, promising success, influence, and achievement if we compromise our integrity. Jesus reminds us that true fulfillment comes from obeying God, not from seeking power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan targets spiritual allegiances (who will you listen and bow down to)<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Satan challenges Jesus to throw Himself off the temple, forcing God to send angels to guard Him (Luke 4:9-11). Essentially, what is being said is: \u201cPeople are not going to follow you to the cross, Jesus. Do something spectacular. Wow the world! You are God; prove it!\u201d This is a temptation to manipulate God rather than trust Him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lesson<\/em><\/strong>:<\/em> We often want proof of God\u2019s presence before we obey, but faith doesn\u2019t demand signs\u2014it trusts that God is faithful and will fulfill His promises. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Strategy for Victory<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

How did Jesus overcome temptation? He used three powerful tools that we also have access to today: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The Word of God<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Every time Satan tempted Jesus, He responded with Scripture: \u201cIt is written\u2026\u201d (Luke 4:4, 8, 12). He didn\u2019t argue with Satan or rely on willpower\u2014He used the truth of God\u2019s Word as a weapon. If we want to resist temptation, we must know God\u2019s Word.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Psalm 119:11 says, \u201cI have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.\u201d Your mind is ground zero for the battle against temptation, and it needs to be soaked in\u2014saturated in\u2014God\u2019s Word. Scripture is \u201calive and active\u201d (Heb. 4:12), and it\u2019s the only offensive weapon listed in Paul\u2019s outline of spiritual armor (Eph. 6). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The Spirit of God<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Luke 4:1 tells us that Jesus was \u201cfull of the Holy Spirit\u201d when He entered the wilderness. The Spirit\u2019s power sustained Him.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We receive the Spirit of God when we trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior of our lives. When you yield to His Lordship, he gives you his Spirit, who battles against the sin nature. He is living in you, and when you abide in him, you are connected to the power source that enables you to say \u201cno\u201d to Satan and \u201cyes\u201d to God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. The Armor of God<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ephesians 6 describes the spiritual armor that protects us against the enemy\u2019s attacks. Jesus embodied this armor\u2014He walked in truth, righteousness, faith, and God\u2019s Word. You can wear this armor every single day to help you wage war against Satan and the sin nature, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, the armor of God listed in Ephesians 6 is Jesus personified. He is truth, righteousness, salvation, and the object of our faith. If we want to defeat temptation, this is the way to do it: You wake up every day and clothe yourself in Christ. You arm yourself\u2014especially your mind\u2014with His Word and ensure you\u2019re connected to the power source: the Holy Spirit. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

I remember the first time I stood up to teach the Bible to a group of women in my local church. I was terrified. Yes, I studied the passage diligently and spent hours preparing pages of notes, but I wasn\u2019t sure if my preparation was effective. Is my teaching structured well? Will the women be interested or learn anything new? Have I interpreted this passage correctly?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many women who are asked to teach a Sunday School class, speak at a Bible study, or lead a small group experience similar fears. They often have little or no training specific to teaching Scripture and feel unequipped and insecure in their preparation. Even so, the abundance of resources available on the subject of teaching Scripture can be paralyzing for a new Bible teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why we need books like Empowered and Equipped: Bible Exposition for Women Who Teach the Scriptures<\/em><\/a>. Julia Higgins, assistant professor of ministry to women at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, seeks to provide women with the tools they need to faithfully and effectively teach the Word of God to other women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empowered and Equipped: Biblical Exposition for Women Who Teach the Scriptures <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJesus commissioned disciples to teach the nations, and women of the church must take his call seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Men and women alike are given the spiritual gift of teaching, yet few resources are designed specifically for women who exposit the Scriptures. In Empowered and Equipped<\/em>, Julia Higgins steers women through the steps needed to faithfully interpret, apply, and teach a passage of Scripture. By examining both the principles and practices of teaching of Bible exposition, Higgins seeks to prepare women in the local church to make and mold disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should Women Teach the Bible?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

First we must ask, Is a book that encourages and equips women to teach Scripture necessary or even appropriate? There\u2019s much discussion today about whether the Bible permits women to teach at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an effort to submit to Scripture\u2019s teaching, many have unfortunately moved beyond what God\u2019s Word prescribes to impose unbiblical restrictions on women. To argue that women shouldn\u2019t teach Scripture in any formal setting misunderstands God\u2019s design for discipleship. Higgins argues that all followers of Christ, including women, are included in the Great Commission and its call to teach other disciples everything Christ commanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, as Higgins explains, \u201cSome may conflate the spiritual gift of teaching with the office of pastor\/elder and draw a false conclusion that only men are to exercise the gift of teaching. While qualified men are responsible to teach and oversee the local church, that does not negate the fact that both men and women are given the spiritual gift of teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All followers of Christ, including women, are included in the Great Commission and its call to teach other disciples everything Christ commanded.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Spiritual gifts, including the gift of teaching, are given for the common good (1 Cor. 12:7<\/a>) and for building up the church (1 Cor. 14:12<\/a>). It follows that women are not only permitted to teach in appropriate settings but are needed for the growth and maturity of the body of Christ. This pattern is exemplified in the women in Scripture who are called to teach and commended for their teaching ministries, many of which Higgins references.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of the biblical call for women to teach, Higgins writes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The end of the matter is this: women should be given a context where they can teach the Word in the local church. Why? Because Christ\u2019s church will grow and others will be discipled in the faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her book, therefore, provides \u201ca pathway for women to exercise teaching gifts in the local church,\u201d and specifically focuses on training women to teach women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helpful Foundation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Higgins provides an accessible yet substantial foundation for teaching Scripture. She incorporates principles and strategies from some of the most highly respected Bible teachers of our day, giving readers a well-rounded introduction to teaching Scripture without information overload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Higgins has a high view of God\u2019s Word and a Christ-centered approach that highlights the overarching storyline of the Bible. Readers will gain essential tools for expository teaching, learning to base the central teaching focus, supporting points, and application on the main point and structure of the text itself. Higgins even encourages this kind of verse-by-verse teaching for topical messages, so that the teacher is always communicating the text\u2019s intended purpose rather than taking passages out of context as proof texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empowered and Equipped<\/em> walks teachers through the process of creating a Bible exposition, from understanding the nature of Scripture all the way to writing an expositional outline. Higgins covers a wide range of content from theoretical to practical, including information on biblical genres, basic doctrinal issues, and hermeneutics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She spends a large portion of the book giving instruction on studying the Bible inductively, including specific strategies for observation, interpretation, generalization, and application and for how that study translates into instruction. The scope of the book makes it suitable for beginners\u2014although they may want to work through it more slowly\u2014as well as for those who have been studying and teaching Scripture for some time but are looking for a process to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Empowered and Equipped<\/em> covers an impressive amount of ground in a surprisingly manageable page count, readers may leave with unanswered questions. For example, the book includes almost no discussion of incorporating meaningful illustrations or transitions. On other topics, such as the discussion of genre or the overview of theological doctrines, Higgins gives only brief introductions. Anything more, however, would make the book overwhelmingly dense, and readers can continue to explore these topics in more depth as they see fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empowered and Equipped to Teach God\u2019s Word<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The church needs gifted women who not only speak on a short list of \u201cfemale-friendly\u201d topics stereotypical of women\u2019s conferences or retreats but who teach the whole counsel of God for the good of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Higgins appeals, \u201cThis call for women to be teachers of the Word arises from a place of care and concern for over half of the body, so that the church might grow in love for God and his Word, passing it along to others, so that they too might go and make disciples of all nations to the end that Christ\u2019s commands are observed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As this book makes its way into the hands of more and more women who treasure the Bible and long to see it elevated and proclaimed, I pray the church will be edified and God\u2019s glory made known. I pray the teachers it equips will grow in their love for Christ even as the women they teach develop new excitement for God\u2019s Word.
